The Myers Briggs Type Indicator

In 1997, Dr. Brock was certified to administer and interpret the Myers Briggs Type Indicator.

The MBTI is based on the personality theory of Carl Jung, as interpreted by the mother-daughter team of Katherine Briggs and Isabel Briggs Myers.  The MBTI is designed to identify preferences in personality type.  Widely used and well researched, the MBTI has many possible application in learning and teaching, business management, counseling, relationships, personal development, conflict resolution, planning, and spirituality.

In the congregational context, Dr. Brock has used the MBTI as a vehicle:

  • to enhance staff relationships and decision-making strategies,
  • to explore how personality difference affect family life,
  • to encourage personal development and self-discovery, and
  • to support processes of spiritual formation.

A few examples of MBTI consults are in order:

  • One church in Virginia had just added a new staff member.  The MBTI consult focused on how the new ministry team might best work together, sharing strengths and covering weaknesses.
  • One family in Virginia and one family in Alabama (both with two teenaged girls) asked for a family consult to understand how personality differences contributed to harmony, or lack thereof, in their respective families.
  • One singles group from South Carolina wanted a retreat focusing on building relationship and growing spiritually.
  • Dr. Brock has offered a number of small group sessions using the MBTI to explore the midlife transition.

Dr. Brock will be happy to talk with you about using the MBTI in your ministry.
