Instructions for the Classroom Component of Assignment 4
Developing Skills in Asking Questions

Prior to Class

Prior to the beginning of class on Saturday, November 6, each student should have completed the following tasks:

·         Develop a series of 10-15 questions designed to facilitate a Bible study in the congregational or institutional context. These questions should reflect the standard of excellence established in Chapter 10 of the text, Teaching Today’s Teachers to Teach by Griggs.

·         Submit these questions to the professor at the beginning of class on Saturday, October 23. The professor provided feedback on these questions and returned these papers to the student on Saturday, October 30.

·         Teach the lesson using these questions in a Bible study context. This teaching session should be recorded (audio, or audio and video formats). The student should bring this recording (as well as some equipment to play back this recording) to class on Saturday, November 6.

During the Class Session

All students should be present at 11:00 a.m. promptly for this class session.

The class will be divided into groups of 2 or 3 persons. During the class period, each person will:

·         Submit a written list of the actual questions used during the Bible study to the professor (in both hard copy and electronic formats).

·         In turn, play the recording of the Bible study facilitated by the questions. This should take between 20 and 25 minutes.

·         Assess and evaluate the questions and the questioning process. The person whose questions are being evaluated should take the lead in this discussion. Using the grading rubrics supplied by the professor, the group should evaluate the questioning process, point by point, using the categories described in the rubrics. In this evaluation, the student who led the Bible study will assess his or her own work, and the other student(s) will conduct a peer evaluation of that work. This should take between 15 and 20 minutes.

·         The group can then take a five minute break before repeating the process with the other members of the group.

·         At the end of the class session, all grading rubric forms should be submitted to the professor.

As previously described, each student’s final grade on Assignment 4 will be determined by:

1.        The professor’s assessment of the written questions.

2.        The student’s self assessment, and

3.        The peer assessment of the student’s work.

Exceptions

·         If a student does not teach a Bible study using his or her questions prior to class, he or she will have 20 minutes to teach that study to the students in his or her small group during the class session. In this case, the student must strictly adhere to the 20 minute time frame (to allow time for his or her evaluation and the evaluation of the work of the other group members).

·         If a student misses class on Saturday, November 6, his or her grade will be determined by the professor’s assessment and evaluation of his or her written questions.
