Spiritual Disciplines

The practice of participating in spiritual disciplines is foundational to spiritual formation and Christian discipleship.

Spiritual disciplines provide ordering of the spiritual life:

  • through daily prayer
  • through private or family eucharist
  • through fasting
  • through journaling
  • through reflection on the day using The Examen
  • through quoting scripture
  • through indepth reflection on the scripture
  • through singing hymns.

Spiritual disciplines show a connection between work and the spiritual life because:

  • life is integrated, not compartmentalized, and
  • even the simpliest forms of manual labor can be an activity through which we experience God.

Spiritual disciplines highlight the importance of silence:

  • to block out all the other “stuff“ with which we fill our day and
  • to allow us to listen to “the holy nudges.“

Each web page associated with this tab contains a brief description of a traditional spiritual discipline.  Practiced for centuries in the Christian tradition, these disciplines have guided our spiritual forebearers on the path toward spiritual formation and mature Christian faith. It is my hope that you too will explore a number of these disciplines, individually or in a small group context.
